The new Clery’s Cosmetic Hall was designed to maximize the exciting contrast of a beautiful period building, arguably one of the finest department stores building in Dublin, with the striking new ultra modern cosmetic stands.
A major feature of the design was the alterations to the main façade display windows and entrance. The existing entrance lobbies and some of the display windows were removed, thereby providing views directly from the street into the store, and “projecting” the hall out onto the street.
The new layout provides for each cosmetic stand to have circulation space on all sides, customers are easily encouraged to browse the stands, while traffic flows have been carefully designed to allow quick passage through the area for customers going to other parts of the store.
The design makes use of the size of the space by “landscaping” the design of the various fixtures. This way perimeter signage will be higher than mid floor signage for cosmetic brands aiding orientation.
The entire floor finish of the hallway was replaced with a homogenous limestone floor to provide a simple high quality backdrop to the cosmetic homes.
The lighting, and specifically the detail lighting within cosmetic stands, was carefully considered by Douglas Wallace in conjunction with each cosmetic house so that a high quality sophisticated lighting scheme was provided maximizing the contrast between general illumination and accented highlights.
Overall the hall was conceived as a high quality environment where the beautiful period building that is complimented by the high quality design of the new cosmetic stands. The contrast in the two styles was emphasized to maximize the design impact of the new hall.
