"I am pleased and the tenants are pleased. They are trading extremely well and have surpassed their targets, making it a very successful centre"
Gerard Barrett, Edward Holdings
On behalf of Edward Holdings, we created an 85,000 sq ft mixed use development in Galway city centre that reflected the rich heritage of the site, incorporating a medieval city wall, making a modern shopping and living environment.
We sought to partake in, and add to, the dynamic streetscape of Galway by extending Shop Street into a new public space and by creating a new 'market' lane along the city walls. These were then extended through the complex to form pedestrian links to the surrounding fabric. The resultant public space catches the sun and has become a vibrant people watching and meeting venue.
The design incorporates the upstanding remains of the 17th century Cromwellian demi-bastion which is probably the only remaining archaeological evidence of the Cromwellian presence inside the walls of Galway.
The architectural approach for this project is characterised by the use of quality materials; stone; planar glass; cedar cladding and stainless steel in a development of sharp, modern architecture and clean lines. It is unashamedly of its time and high density but sits comfortably in its context.
